• Alternative Text overview (Alt Text)

    Have you ever heard that “A picture is worth a thousand words”, well that’s not necessarily true if you consider that some of the most advanced algorithms still can’t “see” and understand what an image is about like humans do. What does that mean? It means that alt text, long description and title tag are very important if you want the search engine algorithms to look at the images on your website and “understand” what they are about and how valuable they are for the content that you are sharing.

    In this article we are not going to discuss if Alt Text is valuable for SEO or not, there are a lot of discussions regarding this topic and we don’t want to go too deep into this. If you want to read more about Alt Text & SEO you can find some interesting articles in the footnotes.

    What is Alt Text (tag)?

    <img src="image.jpg" alt="image description" title="image tooltip”/>

  • As you can see on the image above Alternative Text "alt tag" is typically utilised to describe what an image is about. If you are still not sure what Alt Text is, just hoover your cursor over the image above, and the text message “This is what alt text is” is the alt attribute that provides an alternative information for that particular image.

    Why is Alt Text important?

    As we said at the beginning of this article, we are not going to discuss if alt text is relevant or not for SEO, although there is one thing you need to know: search engine algorithms love crawling well organised sites, and by that we don’t just mean alt text, we are also talking about how you label your images. If you label your images 123.jpg ; 123newversion.png please stop!

    Look at the example below:

  • Let’s say we are looking up on Google for an image of a “cute couple”, and randomly we just picked the 3rd image from the left to the right.

  • Now looking at the html code we can see that the title of the image contains the keywords that we were looking for.

    <img src="https://cdn.quotesgram.com/small/94/47/1346358765-kiss-couple-love-cute.jpg" alt="Promise me you'll never forget me because if I thought you would I'd ..." class="img-responsive jgalleryimg" width="629" height="475">

    Based on what we discussed in this article, we can say that optimising your images alt text, title tag and file name is extremely important if you want the search engine algorithms to look at your website like you look at your beloved, with passion!

    A couple tips that will help you:

    • When writing your alt text / title tag do not stuff it with your keywords, keep it relevant to your image.
    • Include your primary keywords in both, however don't keep them the same.
